Root Canal Process
Teeth are strong, but once they begin to decay, they need immediate treatment. If you have an infected tooth, have had face trauma or have a cracked tooth or filling, you may need a root canal. This process is a chance to save your tooth and remove all the harmful bacteria that cause infections. A root canal consists of several steps:
- Preparation: Before we begin the procedure, we will X-ray your mouth to assess the damage of the problem tooth. We will look for signs of infection and determine the shape of the root canals. The area surrounding the tooth will be numbed before we begin.
- Cleaning: To keep the area clear and dry, we place rubber dams around the tooth. Then we drill an access hole into the tooth that we use to remove the tooth’s pulp and decayed nerve tissue as well as any bacteria and debris.
- Sealing: Depending on the state of your tooth, we may seal the tooth the same day or wait until the infection heals. The sealing process uses sealer paste inside the tooth to replace the previously removed pulp and nerves. Finally, we place a filling to restore the access hole.
